What is a giclée?

Giclée (zhee-clay) is a term derived from a French word meaning a spray of liquid. The term is reserved for a special reproduction process using up-to-date technologies.

Birdseye Art Studio works with one of the best scanning and reproduction companies in the nation. The company is highly regarded for their museum-quality work. Their custom process is expensive; however, they work closely with artists to ensure superior color fidelity, close attention to detail, and excellent longevity.

The process begins with a high resolution digital scan of a work of art. Their trained computer artists ensure that the colors of the original match the giclée print. Their giclée process provides better color accuracy and detail than other means of reproduction because it uses technologically-advanced large format printers with archival inks on archival papers and canvases.

When printed, my giclées are spayed with a UV inhibiting varnish to further protect the image from the damage of light over time.

The giclées offered by Birdseye Art Studio are available on paper or canvas. The reproduction on paper looks like the original pastel. A giclée on paper entails additional expense because it must be custom matted and framed under glass.  A reproduction on canvas is more expensive initially. However, no frame is required because the sides of the canvas are black, and because the stretcher bars on the larger, full size canvas reproductions ensure there will be no warp. A wire for hanging is pre-installed. Whether the choice is a giclée on paper or on canvas depends on the look you want for your home.
